NeTraverse announced today the release of Win4Lin 4.0 Workstation Edition, the fourth generation of the SCO Merge-based Windows-on-Linux software. Win4Lin is similar in concept to VMware, except that it focuses purely on running Windows 9x, and as such has been known to run Windows applications at close to native speeds.

According to the press release, Win4Lin 4.0 will include a number of useful enhancements, such as:
  • Windows Millennium support, in addition to that of Windows 95, 98, and 98 SE.
  • Support for up to 128 MB of ram allocated to Windows applications.
  • Wheel mouse support.
  • Reporting of the correct CPU rather then a virtual Cyrix 486 so that applications requiring a Pentium-class processor will operate.
  • More software supported including Microsoft Office XP and Adobe Photoshop 6.0.
  • Sound playback support.
The new release is now available as a download for $89.99, or a CD-ROM version will be available in May for $99.99. According to the company, registered users of older versions of Win4Lin should receive e-mail instructions on how to purchase Win4Lin 4.0 at a reduced price.
