This is my prefence as it gets the freshest info. The problem with using either of the ISOs is that it means you can't do anything else on your computer that you might normally do while you compile Gentoo - and if you're going from stage1, that's an important point as it'll take a long time. You don't actually need either of the ISOs, really. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to go through the installation guide simply using your own existing distro. In other words, you'd partition/format your drive, download the stage tarball you want, untar it into the root partition, and chroot into it just as you would had you booted from the ISO. There's absolutely no difference as the ISO is really just a bare shell anyway, and the advantage of doing it within your current distro is that you can minimise the window that's installing Gentoo and carry on using Firefox, Gaim, and so on as you would normally do.
