Maybe you should consider not using standby - sounds like you have power management issues. If you are having to reinstall that much, then there is some other variable involved in the mix - too much install/uninstall of programs. I have not had an update that actually broke anything with XP at all. Even SP2 went smoothly, and I didn't have any compatability issues running standard productivity apps, whether open-source or proprietary. 98, NT and 2K were more prone to that happening, but XP appears to fair a bit better.
