[CS-FSLUG] clobbering time

I'm not sure, so I'd like some better educated input. Running my old
laptop, there are some messages on this list that send my CPU into spin
cycle for quite a long period. It doesn't matter which graphical mail
client I use, some messages will freeze the GUI for about 5-10 seconds (or
longer) and the CPU slogs away until the screen finally refreshes and I
can read it. At one point some time ago, I recall seeing some messages
posted in 64-bit MIME or something, and I knew that took uudecode and lots
of energy, but this is really dragging things down.

My current system (RH 7.3, fully updated) isn't handling this well,
whatever it is. Any ideas?
