I think it's demonic possession ;-)

I have heard of this Windows demon before, it carries with it a spirit
of laziness, slowness and disobedience. Contact your local religious
authorities, request the "wreck disk" (www.wreckdisk.com) and follow
the steps until the Windows 98 demon has been expelled from the victim
computer.

Besides that I have encountered similar behaviour in Linux when using
the wrong mouse driver.
